We're excited to introduce a new campus in North Charleston that will replace Roper Hospital in downtown Charleston. This state-of-the-art facility will bring advanced technology, energy-saving designs and easy access from major highways to our patients and community for generations to come.
A smarter, greener hospital
The plan for expansion
Our new campus is taking shape. Guided by input from our doctors and nurses, construction is underway with a grand opening planned for mid-2029. Until then, Roper St. Francis Healthcare will continue serving patients at the current downtown Charleston Roper Hospital and other convenient locations. The new campus will feature advanced technology and sustainable design to support exceptional care.
Built with patients in mind
The new hospital is designed to create a calm and welcoming place for healing.
Key features include:
- Bright spaces with lots of natural light
- Flexible rooms that can change as needs grow
- Areas for families to relax while visiting loved ones
- Green spaces and gardens to connect with nature
What’s happening at the site
Construction is led by crews from a joint venture of Barton Malow | Edifice.
Their work began in fall 2025 with the installation of critical underground elements, including utilities and 4,600 concrete piles to support the building's podium and tower during earthquakes and hurricanes. Steps also were taken to secure major equipment needed for the hospital’s mechanical systems.
In spring 2026, crews finished tearing down a former Verizon building, the largest structure remaining on the site close to North Charleston City Hall. Work to remove pieces of the building stretched into the summer.
The installation of structural steel began in April 2026, marking the main hospital’s vertical rise. Once the structure is topped out with the final steel beam by the end of 2026, work to enclose the building will begin. Many spaces, such as bathrooms, will be prefabricated off site and later installed — allowing interior and exterior progress to occur simultaneously.
