What care option is right for me?
In-person care is best for someone who has an emergency, an urgent problem or an ongoing health issue. Roper St. Francis Healthcare offers three types of in-person care:
- Emergency Room care for life-threatening or emergency needs that can’t wait
- Express Care for issues that are urgent but not life-threatening
- Primary Care for trusted advice, ongoing health issues or preventative care
Express Care is for urgent medical issues that aren’t life-threatening. You can book online same-day or even walk-in to receive medical treatment. Express Care is right for issues like allergies, asthma, cuts needing minor stitches or sprained ankles.
Virtual care or telemedicine is a way to talk to your doctor from home by phone, video call or online messaging. It's best for minor illnesses, like colds, flu or rashes and can also be used for prescription refills. This may also be the right option for you if you need follow-up care for chronic issues like diabetes or a quick chat with your doctor when you aren’t sure if you need an in-person visit.
The Emergency Room is for issues that could be life-threatening. ER visits are for things like difficulty breathing, chest pain, difficulty speaking, fainting spells, heavy bleeding, bleeding that won’t stop or any sudden, severe pain. Our ERs are open 24 hours a day every day.
If you or a loved one are experiencing a health emergency, please call 911.
- Express Care may be best for you if you need in-person treatment right now for something that isn’t life-threatening. Examples of an urgent issue might be a sprained ankle, a sore throat or allergy problems.
- Virtual Care is best if you are a current patient and need things like prescription refills, to ask your doctor a question or you have a minor issue like a cold or the flu.
- Emergency Care is best for life-threatening emergencies like heavy bleeding, broken bones, stroke or other critical care needs.
- Primary Care is best for ongoing care needs because your doctor can get to know you. Problems that last a year or more like arthritis, asthma or diabetes need a primary care provider (PCP). Primary care doctors can also treat the same health issues as Express Care clinics, but it may take longer to get in for an appointment.
Insurance policies vary in their coverage. We know it can be complicated to understand, so here is an easy comparison chart for a few main insurance plan providers. Roper St. Francis Healthcare also provides financial assistance to patients in need.
