Due to the growing number of colon cancer cases among younger people, Dr. Alejandro Suarez, a Palmetto Digestive gastroenterologist affiliated with Roper St. Francis Healthcare, stresses the importance of early detection and proactive health measures. In people younger than 55, there’s been an approximately 10% increase in disease cases since the mid-90s.

Dr. Suarez underlines the need to notice early signs, saying, "If you have symptoms like stomach pain, rectal bleeding, or unexpected weight loss, you should visit your doctor or gastroenterologist to check what's causing these symptoms. It's crucial to exclude colon cancer, especially if you're in your 30s and showing these signs."

A colonoscopy is the best method for finding and preventing colon cancer. It's now a much better experience than before. "We've significantly improved the procedure... it's easier to handle than the old prep solution, and you only fast for 24 hours and take one day off," he mentions. Dr. Suarez emphasizes that being aware, getting screened early and taking proactive steps in healthcare are key to fighting the rise of this serious illness.
