Roper Hospital was the first in the Charleston region to be recognized as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission, followed by Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Berkeley Hospital.  Our comprehensive stroke program also strictly follows the American Stroke Association’s guidelines, using evidence-based medicine to treat each unique patient.

Recognizing stroke symptoms quickly can save or protect a life.

  • Difficulty walking, dizziness, or loss of balance
  • Severe headache with no known cause
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side
  • Sudden vision changes in one or both eyes

At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, rapid response team coverage is available around the clock at all four locations, so expert care is always within reach.

Our stroke team

Neurohospitalists are physicians who specialize in caring for hospitalized patients with neurological conditions. They coordinate with your care team to ensure seamless, high-quality stroke care. In-person neurohospitalist care is available daily from 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. at Roper and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospitals, with 24/7 virtual neurology consultations available across the health system.

Stroke support and resources

A stroke affects more than the individual. It impacts families, caregivers and entire support systems. That's why we're here to provide support every step of the way. 

We offer:

  • Education on stroke prevention and healthy lifestyle changes
  • Guidance and resources for caregivers and loved ones
  • Access to stroke support groups

Join other stroke survivors and their families to share experiences, support one another through challenges and learn about available stroke resources. Our support groups are open to stroke survivors, caregivers and loved ones.

Roper Rehabilitation Stroke Support Group

When: First Thursday every other month 
Where: Roper Rehabilitation Hospital, 316 Calhoun Street, Charleston SC 29401. 3 Pettit Rehab Gym (take E elevators, located near the Emergency Room) 
Time: 3:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. 
 
Groups alternate between in-person and virtual sessions.

Neuro Caregiver Support Group

When: Second Tuesday of each month from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. 
Location: Virtual meetings via Zoom 

This group is for the caregivers of stroke/traumatic brain injury survivors
