In South Carolina measles is serious so get vaccinated now

South Carolina is experiencing a serious measles outbreak, and it’s getting closer to the Charleston area. There are 700 confirmed cases statewide, mostly linked to the Upstate, and public health experts expect continued spread.

If you are not vaccinated, measles is not a distant risk — it is one of the most contagious viruses in the world. So what should you do? Get vaccinated.

Here’s what measles means for you:

• Measles spreads through the air. You can be exposed simply by breathing the same air as someone who is infected — even hours after they’ve left a room.
• You don’t need close contact. A cough in a grocery store, waiting room or workplace can be enough.
• If you’ve never received the MMR vaccine — or don’t know your status — now is the time to act.

Measles is not a mild illness. It can lead to pneumonia, brain swelling, hospitalization and, in some cases, death — especially for infants, older adults and people with weakened immune systems.
