Amputation prevention program

When amputation is a concern, having the right care team can make all the difference. At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, we have the only multidisciplinary limb preservation program in the region focused on healing complex wounds and preventing limb loss.

Our approach

Here, we believe that saving a limb is saving a life. That’s why we’ve created the Charleston region’s only multidisciplinary Amputation Prevention Program.  Focused on early detection and care for wounds, infections and circulation problems that can lead to limb loss, our team works with you to prevent amputation and preserve your quality of life. Your care plan will be tailored to your specific needs, combining wound medicine and surgery with advanced treatments, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, to support healing.

Know what to expect

Understanding what comes next can help you to be an active participant in your care. That’s why we’re here to guide you through each step of our program.

Our team specializes in caring for patients who are at risk of limb loss due to complex lower extremity wounds. If you have diabetes, vascular disease or a history of lower limb wounds, acting early can make a big difference in your health and independence.

Our coordinated approach helps:

  • Improve circulation and healing
  • Preserve mobility
  • Prevent and aggressively treat infections and resulting complications
  • Reduce the risk of amputation
  • Shorten recovery time

First, our team takes the time to understand your condition through a thorough evaluation, which will include a review of your medical and family history, a physical examination and arranging any needed laboratory studies, vascular testing or imaging studies.

Once we have a clear picture of your current condition and health, your expert wound care team will develop a personalized plan focused on supporting healing and promoting your long-term health.

After your evaluation, your care team will work together to develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Depending on your condition, your care may include supporting you through:

  • Debridement or cleaning the wound to remove bacteria which can cause infection
  • Healthy lifestyle changes
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (only for very specific wound diagnoses)
  • Ongoing wound care
  • Minimally invasive procedures to restore blood flow
  • Surgical revascularization

This plan will be centered around you, and we’ll be there to help you get the most out of it.

Healing doesn’t stop after your initial treatment and neither does our care. Your team will closely monitor your progress, with weekly visits and adjust your care plan as needed to support continued healing.

We’ll also help you understand how to care for your wound at home, recognize early signs of concern and take steps to prevent future complications. With ongoing support, education and coordinated care, we’re here to help you stay on track.
