Typical conditions include:

  • Irregular breathing pattern or difficulty breathing
  • Unusual abdominal pain
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Fainting spells, dizziness,weaknessor blurred vision
  • Pain, pressure or tightness in the chest and/or abdominal area
  • Sudden change in mental status (confusion, irritation, unusual behavior, suicidal or homicidal feelings)
  • Sudden and severe pain
  • Excessive bleeding that will not stop
  • Coughing or vomiting up blood

Specialized children’s emergency care

While all our emergency rooms can treat children, the Bon Secours St. Francis and Berkeley Hospitals emergency departments have received a pediatric-ready accreditation. Our emergency rooms are equipped to handle children’s emergencies, with specialized equipment, staff trained specifically for pediatric care, ahavecare policies and procedures that meet nationally recognized standards.

If your child requires extended care beyond the ER, we also provide short-term in-hospital medical treatment through our children’s unit at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, in partnership with MUSC Children’s Health
