Hyperbaric oxygen therapy

At Roper St. Francis Healthcare, we use oxygen therapy to help wounds heal faster and prevent limb loss, so you can get the relief you need.

Oxygen therapy also:

  • Improves circulation
  • Fights infection
  • Stimulates new tissue growth
  • Reduces swelling and inflammation
  • Supports limb preservation

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is for very specific types of wounds. Your wound care specialist will help determine if hyperbaric oxygen treatment is right for you. Treatment is usually given once a day, Monday through Friday, for up to 40 sessions. These daily sessions typically run for eight weeks, but your specialist will help determine how long you need treatment based on your care needs.

Accredited hyperbaric oxygen therapy

The Roper St. Francis Hyperbaric and Undersea Medicine Program is accredited by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society. This accreditation certifies our expertise, positive patient outcomes and dedication to evidence-based treatment.

Conditions & therapies

wound care

When a wound doesn’t heal within 30 days, it may be considered a chronic, non-healing wound. Our program specializes in treating complex wounds and identifying what may be delaying your healing.

We treat a wide range of non-healing wounds, including:

  • Arterial ulcers
  • Burns or slow-healing skin injuries
  • Diabetic foot ulcers
  • Infected wounds
  • Post-surgical wounds with complications
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Radiation therapy wounds
  • Surgical incisions that aren’t healing as expected
  • Traumatic wounds
  • Venous ulcers
  • Wounds caused by poor circulation

Our goal is not only to treat your wound but also to address the underlying cause, so you can heal more effectively and reduce the risk of future complications.

Taking patient information

Before you start therapy, your team will go over your health history, explain the process and answer any questions. They’ll also tell you how to get ready for your upcoming session. For example, you’ll be asked not to wear hair or skin products and not to bring anything into the chamber (such as lighters or battery-powered devices) that could affect your safety.

Hyperbaric oxygen - during therapy

During your session, you’ll rest comfortably in the chamber while breathing pure oxygen. Treatments typically last about two hours, and many patients use this time to relax, nap or watch TV or movies.

Specially trained Hyperbaric Nurses will be with you throughout the session, monitoring you closely and ensuring you’re comfortable. You may feel a slight pressure in your ears, much like what you experience on an airplane, as the chamber adjusts. We’ll guide you through simple techniques to relieve that pressure.

Our goal is to make your experience as calm, safe and comfortable as possible while your body focuses on healing.

Doctor patient with caring hand

Some people may feel tired after their session or notice pressure in their ears. These effects usually go away quickly — often within minutes.

After your session, your team will:
  • Check your ears, blood pressure and pulse - need space after pressure
  • Talk to you about your next session
  • Schedule any needed follow-up appointments - space after needed

Then you’ll be free to resume your normal activities.
