Obstetrical Emergency Department (OB ED)

Should a medical emergency arise during pregnancy, we provide fast, expert care through our dedicated Obstetrical Emergency Departments at both hospitals, where you will see a doctor within 15 minutes of arrival. Testing, labs and other requests that come from the OB ED are made a priority, so you can receive treatment faster.

Labor & Delivery
Our care teams are trained to provide labor support that honors your wishes and create the birthing experience you want. The spacious childbirth suites at both hospitals are designed for the comfort of mom, baby and loved ones, offering:

• A reclining sleeper chair for father or support person and supportive amenities such as peanut balls, rocking chairs and large showers
• Wireless monitoring of baby during labor that allows moms-to-be to walk around or even take a shower 
• Skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth to encourage bonding
• Gentle C-sections (also called family-centered birth) and two dedicated surgical suites for scheduled and emergency C-sections

Mother/Baby Units
After delivery, you'll be welcomed to the mother/baby unit to recover and begin getting to know your new baby. We encourage skin-to-skin contact (or kangaroo care) to help your baby transition to life outside your womb and increase bonding. Our knowledgeable staff will support and educate you on caring for yourself and your baby. We offer:

• Rooming-in with your baby so that you will have the ability to learn baby’s cues
• Halo cribs that swing over your bed to keep baby close to you safely
• Lactation consultants to assist with every aspect of breastfeeding 
• Comprehensive newborn education to help you feel confident when you go home

Nursery
The nurseries at both Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital are staffed with caring and skilled professionals to care for all your baby's needs. Each nursery has advanced equipment and 24/7 neonatology services available for unexpected complications.

If your pregnancy is determined to be high-risk and you need the expertise of a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, we offer a Perinatal Center that provides an advanced level of care and comfort, including genetic screening and counseling.

Our board certified specialists provide care to pregnant women with medical problems such as:

• Hypertension
• Diabetes
• Risk for complications, such as pre-term labor
• Twin or triplet pregnancies
• Other medical conditions
