Lactation and breastfeeding support

A breastfeeding class can increase your confidence when feeding your baby. When you join one of our classes, you’ll learn about breastfeeding basics, hospital procedures and our lactation consultation services. 

Every member of our nursing staff is trained to help you start breastfeeding and support you as you settle into feeding your child. If you’d like a bedside visit from a lactation consultant, let your nurse or doctor know. 

Yes, your breastfeeding consultation is part of your hospital stay when you deliver your baby.

It’s normal to worry if your baby is eating enough. Here are some reassuring tips:

• Babies have signs of hunger and fullness that you can learn to watch for
• By day five, your baby should have six to eight wet diapers and three to five poopy diapers
• Most babies eat eight to 12times in a 24-hour period.
• Offer both breasts with each feeding to encourage milk production

You should visit with your baby’s doctor shortly after leaving the hospital. These appointments usually happen two to four days after birth and again a week after birth. During these appointments, the doctor will check your baby’s weight to see if they’re eating enough.

Yes, it’s normal to experience some leaking before delivery. Don’t worry. Some expectant mothers leak colostrum, the “early milk” stored in their breasts during pregnancy. 

No. You may need a breast pump if your baby can’t nurse well. A pump may also be helpful if you can’t feed in the first days after delivery. Many mothers may use a pump to collect milk for feedings when they are away (such as for work or school). 
 
Hospital-grade pumps and pump kits are available if you need them while staying in the hospital. You can also rent a breast pump from us when you are ready to go home. If you’re not sure which pump to get, our staff can help you make the right choice.
