Earl Jackson, a lifelong Charleston resident and 45-year tech in the Emergency Department at Roper Hospital, became the first Roper St. Francis Healthcare teammate on Tuesday to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccination.
Thirteen additional teammates received the COVID-19 vaccine as part of a trial run for the healthcare system to test its process for vaccinating large number of teammates. Vaccination events for some teammates will be available starting Wednesday.
During this pandemic that has gripped our world and changed our lives forever, the COVID-19 vaccinations that were given today mark what we hope will be a new chapter in this battle, one that eventually will end the spread of this lethal virus. It was a historic moment for our healthcare system and for the Lowcountry.
Roper St. Francis Healthcare received 1,950 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, which is enough to vaccinate roughly one-third of its workforce. The healthcare system is focusing first on on vaccinating our teammates and physicians as recommended by federal and state guidelines. It does not have a process set up for patient referrals yet, but the healthcare system will continue to share more information as soon as it becomes available.
