Three Roper St. Francis Healthcare facilities win Top General Hospital Awards in 2025 from Leapfrog
In another outstanding achievement in safety, three Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals — Roper Hospital, Mount Pleasant Hospital and Berkeley Hospital — have been named Top General Hospitals by The Leapfrog Group, one of the most respected healthcare quality rating organizations in the U.S.
Announced Monday, Dec. 15, this award is one of the most competitive honors that hospitals and surgery centers in the United States can receive for their commitment to safety and quality. The winning facilities will be presented with their awards Monday as part of Leapfrog’s 2025 Annual Meeting and Awards Dinner.
The three Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals are the only facilities in the tri-county area to receive the Top General Hospital honor; only one other hospital in South Carolina received the award. Just 52 hospitals nationwide received the Top General Hospital Award.
“Our hospitals stand out because our teammates stand out,” President and CEO Joseph DeLeon said. “They show up every day focused on safe, high-quality care and truly living our mission. This Top General Hospital recognition from The Leapfrog Group is a direct reflection of their hard work. We’re grateful to every teammate for what they do and thankful to our community for trusting us with their care.”
The accolade marks the fifth consecutive year in which a Roper St. Francis Healthcare facility has been recognized as a Top General Hospital, underscoring the system’s unwavering focus on protecting patients from preventable harm and ensuring safe, top-tier care across its facilities. The three hospitals also received “A” Hospital Safety Grades from Leapfrog in both of its biannual safety assessments. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital received a “B” in both grading periods.
Over 2,400 hospitals were considered for the award. A total of 156 Top Hospitals were selected, including:
- 15 Top Children’s Hospitals
- 52 Top General Hospitals
- 16 Top Rural Hospitals
- 73 Top Teaching Hospitals
The Leapfrog Group is a national nonprofit watchdog organization that rates hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers on how well they protect patients from preventable harm, including accidents, injuries and infections. The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is given to teaching, general, rural and children’s hospitals that publicly report their performance through the Leapfrog Hospital Survey and meet the high standards defined in the Top Hospitals methodology. This includes infection rates, maternity care and a hospital’s ability to prevent medication errors, among other standards.
“These Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals distinguished themselves through an unwavering focus on safety and quality, earning a place on this year’s list of Top Hospitals,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “This recognition reflects a culture of transparency and continuous improvement — one embraced by every member of the organization. We commend the entire team at RSFH for reaching this outstanding milestone.”
To qualify for the distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in their category.
