Tuesday, December 6, 2022 - Two hospitals receive Top Hospital awards from Leapfrog

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital have been recognized as Top Hospitals by the Leapfrog Group for achievements in patient safety and quality.

This is the second consecutive year for both facilities to earn this award.

“The Top Hospital awards demonstrate our commitment as an organization to provide standardized, best in class care including the safety and quality of our patients through transparency and high reliability,” said Marian Savage, vice president of quality. “We’re proud to be state and national leaders for our quality, and we’re grateful to our teammates who made this award possible through their exceptional patient care.”

The Leapfrog Top Hospital award is widely acknowledged as one of the most competitive awards American hospitals can receive. The Top Hospital designation is bestowed by The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers widely acknowledged as the toughest standard-setters for health care safety and quality.

More than 2,200 hospitals were considered for the award and just 32 were named Top Hospitals in the general category. A total of 115 top hospitals were selected as Top Hospitals.

This is the latest Leapfrog award for these facilities. In November, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital, RSF Berkeley Hospital and RSF Mount Pleasant Hospital each “A” Hospital Safety Grades from The Leapfrog Group for protecting hospital patients from preventable harm and errors. This marked the sixth consecutive “A” for BSSF, the fourth consecutive “A” for RSF Mount Pleasant Hospital, and the first “A” for RSF Berkeley Hospital.

For the Top Hospital award, the quality of patient care across many areas of hospital performance is considered in establishing its qualifications, including infection rates, practices for safer surgery, maternity care and the hospital’s capacity to prevent medication errors. The rigorous standards are defined in each year’s Top Hospital Methodology.

To qualify for the Top Hospitals distinction, hospitals must rank top among peers on the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, which assesses hospital performance on the highest standards for quality and patient safety, and achieve top performance in its category.
