Colorectal Surgery

If your doctor has recommended surgery for your colorectal condition, be sure to ask if you may be a candidate for robotic surgery. Roper St. Francis’ robotic colorectal program is internationally recognized and features South Carolina’s only two board certified robotic colorectal surgeons. Additionally, Roper Hospital has been designated as a Robotic Epicenter.

To achieve this distinction, our program met a rigorous list of criteria including:

  • Our host surgeon, Jorge Lagares-Garcia, MD, has completed more than 100 procedures.
  • Our surgical techniques are teachable, reproducible and effective.
  • We provide dedicated personnel to conduct training.
  • We are working towards becoming the most highly-rated colorectal epicenter in the nation.

Colorectal conditions that can be treated with robotic surgery:

  • Colorectal cancer
  • Diverticulitis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease)

Colorectal Cancer

A colorectal cancer diagnosis is frightening, but it is good to know that we have some of the world’s leading colorectal cancer experts right here at Roper St. Francis. In fact, we treat the most colon cancer patients in our area. Our program is internationally recognized for robotic colorectal surgery and Roper Hospital is now a teaching center for this advanced colon cancer fighting tool.

If your doctor recommends colorectal surgery, ask about minimally invasive robotic surgery. This procedure requires just a few tiny incisions so you can recover, move on to additional treatment, if needed, and get back to your life.

Potential benefits of robotic surgery vs. open surgery:

  • Less blood loss
  • Less pain
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker return of bowel function
  • Quicker return to a normal diet
  • Faster recovery

Potential benefits of robotic surgery vs. traditional laparoscopic:

  • Lower conversion rate to open surgery
  • Fewer major complications
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Quicker return to a normal diet
