What is Hyperbaric & Undersea Medicine?

The Roper St. Francis Hyperbaric Oxygen Program is accredited with distinction by the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society. Our program is committed to using only evidence-based, nationally recognized indications and safety practices. Our trained staff is on-call and available for emergent indications.

How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Work?

Oxygen is essential to proper healing of bodily tissues, whether it's skin, muscle or bone. In most cases, the act of breathing provides enough oxygen for body tissues to heal. However, in certain circumstances, hyperbaric oxygen treatment is used to substantially increase oxygen flow within tissues to improve healing by delivering hospital grade oxygen under high pressure.

Patients undergoing hyperbaric treatment are placed in a chamber where 100% oxygen is circulated. The oxygen is pressurized so that air pressure may be 2-3 times greater than normal. This allows the lungs to absorb more concentrated oxygen, which then circulates via the blood.
