Friday, February 26, 2016 - Roper St. Francis president and CEO announces his retirement


David Dunlap will retire at the end of the year as president and chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis, the largest healthcare system for adults in the Lowcountry.

Dunlap told the healthcare system’s 5,600 employees on Thursday that his 13 years with Roper St. Francis has been his most rewarding and enjoyable of his 40-plus year career. He said his passion to lead at Roper St. Francis always has outweighed the prospect of retiring.

“My wife, Pamela, and I at least once a year have a conversation about whether this will be the year that I will step away,” Dunlap said. “And every time, we have agreed that I will continue because I’ve loved this job that much. I still love my job. But now, at age 72, I’ve decided with Pamela that the time is right to spend more time with family, to play golf, to travel, to serve in the community and to enjoy the privilege of living in Charleston.”

Dunlap helped bring together the cultures of Roper and Bon Secours St. Francis hospitals during the years following the 1998 merger. He also helped build Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital, gain approval for building Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital in Goose Creek and create a vast network of physicians and services across seven counties.

One of Dunlap’s most recent achievements involved helping to form the Roper St. Francis Health Alliance, the Tri-County area’s first clinically integrated network made of employed and independent physicians who are focused on improving the patient’s experience of care, improving the health of populations and reducing the per capita cost of care.

“At Roper St. Francis, the term ‘wellness’ is not just an industry catch phrase,” Dunlap said. “It’s the way we do business by coordinating care and keeping our patients and teammates healthier.”

In July 2015, Boeing South Carolina announced that the new Preferred Partnership option will be offered to their teammates exclusively through the doctors and hospitals of the Roper St. Francis Health Alliance.

“David helped move the system forward in a dramatic way,” said Dr. Brian Cuddy, chair of the Roper St. Francis Board of Directors. “He had a vision about partnering with industries like Boeing to provide quality, integrated healthcare. The medical staff is confident about the future of Roper St. Francis because of the direction David has taken this healthcare system.”

Dunlap has used his talents to benefit not only the healthcare industry but the community as well. He has recently served in leadership positions for the Charleston Regional Development Alliance, the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce and the Trident United Way.

“David has been an extraordinarily positive asset for our community,” said former Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley, Jr. “His skillful and thoughtful leadership of Roper St. Francis has brought invaluable community resources to the Lowcountry and he has improved the wellbeing of the citizens of our region. David has been so generous with his time and energy in support and service of so many community initiatives.”

A national executive search firm will assist Roper St. Francis in recruiting a new president and chief executive officer.

Dunlap said that this is not the time for saying goodbye because there is much work to do in 2016. He said he plans on spending the remainder of the year working with teammates to prepare Roper St. Francis for continued success.

“I often say RSF is a special place, and for good reason,” Dunlap said. “We have a rich, 150-year history. We place greater value on caring for our patients rather than profit. And we have the most amazing teammates who transform our mission statement – “healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence” – into the way they live and work.”
