Toni Flowers

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Aug. 22, 2016) — Roper St. Francis Healthcare has selected a nationally recognized expert as its first-ever leader dedicated to cultivating diversity and inclusion.

Mary “Toni” Flowers will join the Lowcountry’s largest healthcare system for adults on Sept. 6 as a vice president and chief diversity officer.

“I am thrilled to not only live in one of the most desirable cities in the world, but to join a healthcare system that places such value on teammates and patients’ spiritual, cultural and emotional needs,” Flowers said.

As part of the healthcare system’s senior leadership team, Flowers will report directly to the president and chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare.

“Toni has been recognized in her community and nationally as a leader who has addressed healthcare inequities among under-served populations,” said David Dunlap, president and chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “Her experience is a perfect complement to our focus on community outreach and our mission of ‘healing all people with compassion, faith and excellence.’ ”

Flowers is president and chief executive officer of ETHOS Worldwide, which is a Michigan-based consulting, leadership development and coaching firm specializing in change management.

She’s also a faculty member, executive coach and executive committee member of the Institute for Diversity, which is an affiliate of the American Hospital Association. In this capacity, she has been an adviser to diversity leaders of hospitals and healthcare systems nationally and has assisted in the creation of organizational diversity and disparity strategic action plans.

Flowers was honored by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid for her work in developing and implementing a three-year, statewide program that achieved the greatest national reduction in healthcare disparities. Flowers is also a nurse and medical anthropologist.
