Tuesday, March 01, 2016 - All three Roper St. Francis hospitals named among Top 100 in the country
All three of Roper St. Francis' flagship hospitals were named among the Top 100 Hospitals in the country for their overall performance, according to ratings released by Truven Health Analytics.

Roper St. Francis' three hospitals were the only ones in South Carolina to earn spots on the coveted list this year. This marks the first time all three hospitals have made the Top 100 in the same year.

Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital was honored in the small hospital category, Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital was recognized in the medium community hospital category, and Roper Hospital was honored in the large hospital category.

Matt Severance, chief operating officer of Roper St. Francis and chief executive officer of Roper Hospital, said this award is special because it doesn’t single out any one area. The Top 100 hospitals are rated on a broad range of criteria including patient satisfaction, quality processes and outcomes, and operational excellence.

"It is a tremendous honor when one of our hospitals makes the Top 100 Hospitals list, so we are blown away that all three of our hospitals are considered among the best in the nation," he said. “It’s a wonderful and well-deserved compliment to our team."

Researchers evaluated more than 3,000 short-term, acute care hospitals using publicly available data to evaluate clinical and operational performance. The top 100 Hospital award winners had better survival rates, fewer patient complications, shorter lengths of stay, lower readmission rates and higher profit overall margins. Hospitals do not apply for this award, and winners do not pay to market this honor.

Bon Secours St. Francis also was named one of the 17 Everest Award winners, or those hospitals among the top 100 winners that have delivered the greatest rate of improvement over five years. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital previously was named a Top 100 Hospital in 2012 and 2013.

“Our incredible team has been working hard, especially these past few years, and those efforts are paying off with national honors,” said Allen Carroll, regional chief executive officer of Roper St. Francis and chief executive officer of Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. “After being redesignated as a Magnet Hospital last summer and being named a Top 100 Hospital now, this reaffirms that we are leading our peers across the country and moving in the right direction.”

This marks the second consecutive year Roper Hospital has been named one of the top 100 hospitals. This is Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital’s first time to be listed among the Top 100 Hospitals. Chief Executive Officer Anthony Jackson, who joined Roper St. Francis in January, said he feels fortunate to be a part of such an outstanding organization.

“This kind of national recognition speaks to the quality of its people – from our teammates to our executive leadership,” he said. “I’m especially grateful for our Vice President of Nursing Tavia Buck, who served as the hospital’s interim leader last year and, as evidenced by this kind of award, pushed the hospital to excel and to grow so that we now are in the company of the premiere hospitals nationwide.”

The study found that the top performing hospitals in the country were able to improve outcomes while reducing overall expense per patient, according to Truven Health Analytics, which provides healthcare data, analytics and consulting services

“Many of the 2016 100 Top Hospitals award winners are breaking the mold for high performance," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president at Truven Health Analytics, in a statement. "Hospitals in three out of the five hospital categories actually reduced overall expense year over year, while improving patient outcomes."
