Former Charleston Southern football coach David Dowd was greeted Wednesday at the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center by a waiting room full of former players, friends, coaches and family, after his final of 39 radiation treatments for prostate cancer.

Dowd, who was overcome with emotion as he rang the bell signifying the end of his treatment, now promises to dedicate himself to spreading the word about the importance for men to get themselves checked.

Dowd, now a teacher and coach at West Ashley High School, says he displayed no symptoms, and a simple blood test saved his life.

Scott Eisberg has the full story on Dowd’s special day in the video above.
