Tuesday, August 18, 2015 - Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital redesignated as Magnet

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital successfully has achieved Magnet recognition for the second time.

The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. It’s considered the ultimate gold seal for patient care among hospitals worldwide.

“Although Magnet designation is the hardest thing we’ve ever done, it also is, without a doubt, the best thing for our patients and staff,” said Pennie Peralta, vice president of nursing for Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital. “It is an honor to work here with the best of the best, where our focus always is on providing the highest quality care for every patient, every time.”

Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital first became recognized as a Magnet in 2010. Magnet hospitals must reapply every four years to maintain their status.

The re-designation process takes more than a year to complete and includes an application, written documentation and a three-day site visit. Hospitals must prove their structures and processes contribute to a healthy work environment and excellent patient care, as well as provide outcomes that show they make a difference in the quality of care and are excellent places to work.

“By achieving this for the second time, it shows that we have not only maintained the level of excellence Magnet status represents, but have raised the bar and excelled beyond where we were five years ago,” said Tanya Lott, the hospital’s Magnet program director. “As we continue to use the Magnet model, I can’t wait to see how much we grow in the next four years.”

There are just 419 Magnet facilities in the world. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is one of just two Magnet hospitals in South Carolina and the only Magnet hospital in the Lowcountry.
