Inpatient rehabilitation plays a vital role in a patient's full recovery and begins the day following surgery.
On day one post-op patients are out of bed and moving around - with a lot of assistance. Almost all of our patients are discharged directly to home. Rehabilitation continues at home with the goal of returning the patient to a healthy lifestyle. A notebook given to the patients in our pre-op classes includes instruction for strength-building exercises to do at home. Exercising is important for patients to obtain the best results from surgery.
Occasionally, a patient may need to make further progress before going home. The patient's physical therapist, doctor and nurse will discuss if further rehab is necessary and if the patient should be transferred to a rehabilitation or skilled nursing facility. Further rehab focuses on getting the patient back into their home environment.
