| Signs
of Stroke |
A stroke is caused by the lack of blood and
oxygen to the brain usually due to a ruptured
blood vessel or clogged arteries. A stroke
will usually occur suddenly, with little or
no warning. Persons with high blood pressure
and hardened arteries are more likely to have
strokes.
Symptoms of someone having
a stroke:
- Sudden, severe
headache
- Sudden numbness
or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially
on one side
- Trouble speaking
or understanding, sudden confusion
- Blurred vision
- Loss of balance
or coordination
- Dizziness
What to do:
- Summon an ambulance
immediately
- Keep victim down
flat, or with the head slightly raised.
Loosen tight clothing. If victim is nauseated,
place him in the semi-prone position with
the affected arm and leg underneath, leaving
the unaffected limbs free. Cushion the
paralyzed arm and leg.
- Cover with a single
blanket
- Try to calm and
reassure victim.
- Do not try to transport
the victim to the hospital yourself, unless
it's the last resort.
- Never give the
victim anything to drink.
