The Cancer Center maintains an active Oncology Research Department offering patients the ability to participate in national clinical trials through our association with the Southeast Cancer Control Consortium, Inc (SCCC). SCCC is a community clinical oncology program (CCOP) located in Winston-Salem, N.C.  Roper St. Francis Cancer center’s participation in SCCC provides our physicians with access to clinical trials through various research groups such as Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG), Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG), University of Michigan Oncology Group (UMCC), and University of Rochester Oncology Group (URCC).  Participation in clinical trials gives patients access to the most up-to-date treatments for a specific disease, before they become broadly introduced into the evidence.  The cancer research department has studies open in many disease sites with an average of 30 studies open for treatment and prevention at any given time.  The research department currently has over 35 clinical trials open in the following disease sites: breast, colorectal, lung, pancreas, prostate, gallbladder, lymphoma, skin, head and neck, gastric and esophagus and myleodysplasia.
