Roper St. Francis Cancer Care achieves Gold-level Commendation
CHARLESTON (Sept. 10, 2014) – Roper St. Francis Cancer Care is the only program of its kind in the Lowcountry to achieve this year a Gold-level Commendation, the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer’s highest accreditation.
Full three-year accreditation with Gold-level Commendation is given to programs that meet all 27 standards addressing quality reporting and improvement, comprehensiveness of services, multidisciplinary care, compliance with evidence-based guidelines and participation in clinical trials. The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) surveyed RSF Cancer Care in July.
“What this signifies to patients is that we are offering advanced evidenced-based care with excellence, including access to clinical trials,” said Scott Broome, Roper St. Francis’ director of oncology services. “On top of that, to receive this accreditation at the highest level means we are doing better than 93 percent of similar centers in the country.”
More than 1,500 CoC-accredited cancer programs operate in the United States and Puerto Rico, representing 30 percent of all hospitals that provide care to more than 70 percent of newly diagnosed cancer patients annually. Only 17 accredited programs operate in South Carolina. Nine of the accredited South Carolina programs are in the same class as Roper St. Francis, which includes non-teaching programs that treat more than 500 newly diagnosed patients annually.
RSF Cancer Care treats nearly 2,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients each year. It also is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers.
