Thursday, February 28, 2019 - Two of our hospitals earn highest federal rating

Two Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospitals – Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital and Roper Hospital – earned five out of five stars for overall hospital performance on ratings released today by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Only 293 – or 6.4 percent – of hospitals nationwide earned five stars. The ratings were based on more than 50 rigorously tested quality measures including patient experience, mortality, readmission rates and the safety of care.

Roper Hospital and Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital were the only two hospitals in the Lowcountry to earn five stars. The third Roper St. Francis Healthcare hospital – Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital – earned four stars, an accomplishment that less than a third of the nation’s 4,573 hospitals achieved.

“These scores from the federal government serve as validation that our nurses, physicians and teammates offer patient-centered care with exceptional outcomes,” said Dr. Todd Shuman, Vice President and Chief Physician Officer for Roper St. Francis Healthcare. “We are immensely proud of our team’s hard work in ensuring our patients are safe, that they infrequently return for additional care, and that they have the best possible experience.”

The Star Ratings drive systematic improvements in care and safety as hospitals strive to achieve and maintain high ratings, according to a CMS press release.

“In order to harness competition to lower costs and improve quality, patients need meaningful, actionable information,” according to CMS. “Consumers and patients point to Hospital Compare and the Star Ratings as important resources and rely on the latest data. Many hospitals rely on these ratings to identify areas for improvement.”
