Roper St. Francis Healthcare Physician Named Man of the Year
CHARLESTON, SC (June 11, 2014) – A Roper St. Francis Healthcare physician was named Man of the Year by the state chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) after raising more than $52,000 for blood cancer research and patient services.
Dr. Matthew Beldner, a partner with Lowcountry Hematology & Oncology, was the top male fundraiser and will be entered into the national competition for Man & Woman of the Year, along with Ellen Hoffman with Nirenblat Nirenblatt Hoffman.
“This is a great organization that provides patient services and also promotes cancer research, and they’ve been exceptionally accessible for patient care,” Dr. Beldner said. “If you’ve ever been touched by leukemia or lymphoma, you know about their outstanding work.”
During 10 weeks of fundraising, candidates were judged on their success in generating funds to advance the mission of LLS. Dr. Beldner and Hoffman raised the most money and were awarded the titles of 2014 Man & Woman of the Year on Friday during a campaign finale celebration. The candidates competed in honor of the Society’s Boy & Girl of the Year, local children who are blood cancer survivors and sources of inspiration to others.
“Man & Woman of the Year is a great opportunity for participants to network with other candidates while raising money for a great cause,” said Paul Jeter the executive director of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s South Carolina Chapter. “Candidates gain personal and professional exposure in the Charleston community while they help others.”
