Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital Achieves Pathway to Excellence® Designation
Hospital is paving the way for the ideal nursing environment
Charleston, SC (Feb. 26, 2014) – The American Nurse’s Credentialing Center (ANCC) has announced that Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital (MPH) is one of only 112 hospitals in the nation to earn the Pathway to Excellence® designation, a rigorous program that recognizes the elements of an ideal nursing environment.
“We are proud to announce that Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital is the second in the state to become a Pathway hospital,” said Diana Topjian, vice president and chief nursing officer at Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital. “We set out to achieve this designation because we are committed to creating an atmosphere that promotes collaboration so that patients receive the best care. Excellent outcomes are not only desired, but achieved when our teams are fully engaged.”
To achieve the Pathway to Excellence recognition, a facility has to meet standards and demonstrate competency in 12 categories:
• Control of nursing practice
• Safety of the work environment
• Systems in place to address patient care concerns
• A solid nurse orientation
• A chief nursing officer involved at all levels of the organization
• Professional development opportunities
• Competitive wages
• Nurse recognition
• Balanced lifestyle
• Exemplary interdisciplinary collaboration
• Leadership accountability
• Quality initiatives
Hospitals must submit a written survey describing how they meet the 12 standards that are a part of the Pathway program. The ANCC then conducts an online survey which compares the written submission with the survey responses; the survey must be completed by more than half of the nursing staff and results must be at least 75 percent favorable. The process can take six months to a year to complete.
