Tuesday, July 31, 2018 - Roper St. Francis Healthcare forges new partnership with Mercedes-Benz Vans
Mercedes-Benz Vans and Roper St. Francis Healthcare, two organizations committed to quality, performance and safety, have launched a new partnership to provide on-site occupational health services to Mercedes-Benz Vans employees.

Mercedes-Benz Vans unveiled on Tuesday the new clinic inside its Ladson plant where Sprinter vans for the United States market are assembled.

“We are excited about this relationship,” said Lorraine Lutton, RSFH President and Chief Executive Officer. “When you think about Mercedes-Benz internationally you think about quality, safety, excellence and performance, and we know that Roper St. Francis Healthcare offers each of those attributes as well.

“This is an honor to bring an international quality leader together with a Lowcountry leader – Roper St. Francis Healthcare.”

This partnership marks the third local employer – the other two are Boeing South Carolina and Bosch – for which Roper St. Francis Healthcare provides occupational health services.

A nurse and an athletic trainer will be physically present in the clinic, and a physician can be reached virtually, if needed. RSFH Occupational Health Medical Director Dr. Ed Galaid demonstrated the clinic’s telemedicine technology.

“You’ll have the eyes and ears of the nurse and the trainer on site, and you have a clinician who can make a diagnosis,” Galaid said. “This is where the action is for providing excellent occupational health services as well as assisting in care with non-work-related conditions.”

Mercedes leaders said the main purpose of the clinic is for its employees to easily and conveniently be diagnosed and treated without needing to travel outside the building.

Biljana Jelacic, head of Human Resources, said the company’s goal is to provide every resource that its employees need.

“This is why we decided to build this medical center on site,” Jelacic said. “With RSFH as our partner and with the high quality that they are providing, we have a great collaboration ahead of us.”

Fast facts about Mercedes-Benz Vans:
• Mercedes-Benz Vans, LLC (MBV) is located in Ladson across from Roper St. Francis Office Park where Sprinter vans for the U.S. market under the brands Mercedes-Benz and Freightliner are assembled. The midsize Metris van was added to the assembly line in 2015.
• The current assembly process, referred to as “semi-knockdown,” involves the re-assembly of vans originally produced in Germany and Spain and partially disassembled for shipping to the U.S.
• In March 2015, MBV announced a $500 million expansion to begin producing Sprinter vans part-by-part in the United States for the first time ever.
• With this expansion, the MBV team would grow from around 130 people to up to 1,300 by 2020.
• This dramatic growth in manufacturing positions called for more onsite services to best serve the needs of their team.
