MT. PLEASANT, SC (WCSC) - By 2015, research from the American Cancer Society suggests there will be an estimated 1,658,370 new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States.

Wednesday, more than twenty lowcountry residents made their way to the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center, looking to fight the disease with food.

The two-part series, called Foods to Fight Cancer, cost $10 per person to register.

A patient navigator through the American Cancer Society led the class, sharing potential life-saving tips, and fiber-filled recipes.

Course instructor Kelly Hauschild said Wednesday, foods high in fiber, like beans, help rid the body of extra hormones or toxins.

"Its a way to empower folks," she said.

"We're giving them information on ways to continue to fight their cancer."

The diet also encourages plant-based foods, rich in color, like corn or red peppers.

The class is intended to supplement cancer treatments, and not replace them.
