Roper Hospital has announced it has earned the Healthgrades 2014 Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence.

The award is the result of a two-year study conducted by Healthgrades, an online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. More than 4,500 hospitals were studied nationwide and only 260 hospitals were selected. These hospitals represent the top 5 percent in the nation.

Roper Hospital is the only hospital in the Lowcountry included in the 260 hospitals chosen by Healthgrades, and one of four in South Carolina.

“This recognition is confirmation for our patients that we are fully committed to the quality of their care,” said Roper Hospital CEO Matt Severence. “Many of our patients use Healthgrades when selecting a provider. This award is a wonderful acknowledgement of the Roper team’s strong performance.”

The study conducted by Healthgrades describes the top-performing hospitals as sharing a fierce commitment to continuously improving clinical care and having quality embedded in a hospital culture.

From 2010 through 2012, Healthgrades Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence as a group adjusted the rate of deaths by an overall 26.4 percent across 19 procedures and conditions.

Roper Hospital has been recognized many times for quality by Becker’s Hospital Review, SafeCare Group, Medicare, The Studer Group, Blue Cross/Blue Shield Blue Distinction, and U.S. News and World Report (Truven Analytics).
