The American Heart Association will hold the 17th annual Charleston Heart Ball Art & Wine Auction on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the downtown Marriott in the Crystal Ballroom.

Dr. Scott Ross, Roper St. Francis Cardiothoracic Surgeon and 2014 Charleston Heart Ball Chair, will host more than 300 individuals representing leaders from the Lowcountry medical, business and social communities. The event will raise funds to reduce disability and death from the nation's No. 1 killer, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, our nation's No. 4 cause of death.

The Charleston Heart Ball celebrates the American Heart Association's work and mission and honors the donors and volunteers, and – most importantly – the lives saved and improved because of the collaborative effort.

The American Heart Association funded nearly $3 million dollars in research last year alone in South Carolina and $3.3 billion has been invested nationally in research since 1949.

The event features a silent auction with original works of art, weekend getaways and collectible bottles of wine. A three-course gourmet dinner follows with a live auction featuring artist, Christopher Groves.

Groves, a classically trained painter, is a “Signature” member of the Oil Painters of America and the American Society of Marine Artists. Born in Boulder, Colo., and moved to Charleston eight years ago, he was drawn to the subtle beauty that the Lowcountry provided in his art. Groves has won numerous awards and medals and is represented in various galleries and museums throughout the United States.
