Many women may not be aware that heart disease and stroke are major threats to their health. Heart disease is the number one cause of death among women in the United States, and stroke is number three.

The Facts

  • Cardiovascular disease kills nearly twice as many women as all forms of cancer.
  • 1 in 2.6 women will die of cardiovascular disease compared with 1 in 30 from breast cancer.
  • 49% of African American women have some form of cardiovascular disease.
  • 31% of Hispanic women die of heart disease or stroke.
  • More women than men die from a stroke each year.
  • 64% of women who died suddenly of a heart attack had no previous symptoms.
